It was in the year 1987, when an idea transformed the canvas of Surajkund and the seat of the 10th century Tomar chieftain, Surajpal, into a spectacular venue for India’s finest and popular handloom and handicrafts fair.
Finest craftspersons from across the country wind their way to participate in a celebration of India’s age old living crafts in a rhapsody christened Surajkund Crafts Mela1. The best of the crafts are unveiled under cosy thatch roofs, ethnic ambience and rural romance of Indian villages.

SHANGHAI Cooperation Organization
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation is participating as the Partner Nation of the 36th Surajkund International Crafts Mela and bringing colours of more than 25 Countries under one umbrella.
As the popularity grew so did the scale of the Surajkund Mela. The Mela was lent a global appeal in 2009 with Egypt being the first focus nation for the 23rd edition of the Mela. The Mela was rechristened ‘Surajkund International crafts Mela’ when Thailand was introduced as the first partner nation in the 26th edition in 2012.
The prominence of the Surajkund Mela was scaling new heights, as more and more foreign countries were vying to participate in the Mela to showcase their culture, crafts and cuisines. With participation of Egypt, came in a new wave of international artists, craftsmen and cultural fare.
